A short peripheral intravenous catheter (PIVC) is a long, thin tube that is used to inject fluid or medication directly into a vein or to draw blood samples for testing. A needle is inserted and subsequently removed from a peripheral vein (i.e., veins found in the arms, hands, legs, or feet), leaving a small tube (the cannula) at the insertion site. The catheter is then attached to the patient's arm with the help of adhesive tape. Peripheral catheters are made of non-irritant and medical-grade materials like polyurethane or silicone. These advanced models have additional safety features to prevent needlestick injuries in hospital Intensive Care Units (ICUs).
Technavio’s analysts forecast the global short PIVC market to grow at a CAGR of 6.43% during the period 2017-2021.
