Summary
The Government of Macau through its executing agency Transportation Infrastructure Office (TIO) is undertaking the Macau Light Transit System (MLTS) Development project in Taipa, Macau.

The project involves the construction of a light rail line and is planned to be implemented in two phases. Phase I includes construction of 20km light rail line with 21 stations connecting Macau, Taipa and Cotai.

The 21 stations are located at Portas do Cerco, Hak Sa Van Park, Areia Preta (Northeast), Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal, Golden Lotus Square (Macau Fisherman’s Wharf), Dr Carlos d’Assumpcao Park, Jardim das Artes (Art Garden), Nam Van Lake, Sai Van Lake, Largo da Barra (A-Ma Temple), Sai Van Bridge, Macau Jockey Club, Macau Stadium, Pai Kok, West Cotai, Posto Fronteiriço de Cotai (Lotus Bridge), Macau East Asian Games Dome, East Cotai, Macau University of Science and Technology, Macau International Airport and Pac On Ferry Terminal.

Phase II includes construction of light rail line connecting the Barrier gate to A-Ma Temple passing through the inner harbour area, and eventually form a loop on the Macao peninsula.

The project includes three rail lines. Line one route starts from Barrier Gate (Portas de Cerco) and pass along Areia Preta, and Nam Van District before reaching A-Ma temple with a track length 10 km.

Line two route starts from Sai Van Bridge (Porte do Sai Van) to Macao Stadium, Estrada da Baia de Nossa Senhora da Esperanca branches, Cotai and Macao International Airport or Taipa Ferry Terminal with track length of 5.5km.

Line three route starts from Estrada da Baía de Nossa Senhora da Esperança to Cotai city with track length of 3.5 km.

The routes include a 2.6 km underwater tunnel between Nam Van and Sai Van lakes and four underground stations.

On December 2, 2009, the Transportation Infrastructure Office (TIO) issued tenders for supplying rolling stock and systems for phase one of the project with submission deadline as March 12, 2010.

In January 2011, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) was awarded the supply contract for supplying rolling stock and railway systems. The other preferred bidders were Siemens-China Civil Engineering Construction Corp and Bombardier Transportation-China Road & Bridge Corp LRT consortium.

A joint venture of Continental Engineering Corporation and Top Builders Group Limited was appointed as the Design Build contractor on phase I of the project.

In February 2012, construction works on the first phase of the project commenced.

Construction activities are underway.
