Summary U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Alaska (USACE) and City of Nome(CoN) is planning to undertake the upgrade of a port in Alaska, the US.
The project involves the construction of additional facilities to the port. It includes the construction of a 195m2 causeway, a 41m2 concrete caisson dock, loading and unloading facilities, warehouses, administrative space and related infrastructure, and the installation of machinery and equipment.
In 2012, USACE launched the Alaska Deep-Draft Arctic Port System study to evaluate potential locations and determine the feasibility of improvements as part of a larger system of port facilities.
In February 2015, USACE released a draft feasibility report and an environmental assessment for the project report.
As of October 2015, USACE put the feasibility studies on hold for the period of one year to re-validate the project’s economic potential and justification.
In January 2016, CoN is seeking funds to aid in completion of design work.
In April 2016, state government allocated US$1.6 million for completion of design activities.
In November 2016, study activities on the project has been put on hold as USACE waiting for guidance on "how to proceed" from USACE headquarters.
In February 2017, Port of Nome (CoN) floats Dreading bid invitation.
In February 2018, USACE and CoN entered into a formal agreement for a new study on the project with a cost of US$3 million.
Study activities are underway and it will last for at-least three years before completion.
