Landsvirkjun is undertaking the upgrade of the Burfell hydroelectric power plant on Thjorsa River in southern Iceland.

The project involves the construction of a 100MW hydroelectric power plant. On April 10, 2015, Landsvirkjun invited bids from companies to provide engineering consulting services for the project with April 28, 2015 as the submission date.

On June 15, 2015, Landsvirkjun invited pre-qualified bids from companies to design, manufacture, install and commission the power plant with July 14, 2015 as the submission date.

In September 2015, Verkis signed a consultancy agreement with Landsvirkjun.

On March 24, 2016, IAV Contractors, a joint venture formed by Íslenskir aðalverktakar hf., Marti Contractors Ltd., Marti Tunnelbau AG was appointed as contractor.

Andritz Hydro Private Ltd has been awarded the supply contract.

In April 2016, construction works commenced and are underway with completion scheduled by the third quarter of 2018.
