Summary
National Grid NSN Link Ltd (NGG) and Statnett SF (Statnett) are undertaking the construction of an offshore transmission interconnector from Blyth in Northumberland, the UK to Kvilldal in Rogaland, Norway.

The project involves the construction of a two-way 515kV, 720km subsea link, 10km onshore route, substations, control units, supportive systems, and the installation of power control units, equipment, and machinery.

Arup has been appointed as consulting engineer for the project.

In June 2013, NGG secured an electricity inter-connector license from the Gas & Electricity Markets Authority (Ofgem).

In December 2013, NGG submitted an application for a marine license to the Marine Management Organization (MMO) and an outline planning application to Northumberland County Council for a converter station and cable landing in the East Sleekburn area.

An environmental impact assessment (EIA) test was completed in July 2014.

In March 2015, Statnett signed an ownership agreement with the NGG for the construction of the project.

In July 2015, Prysmian and Nexans secured supply contract. Prysmian will supply and install 950km of mass impregnated (MI) paper insulation HVDC submarine and land cables, which will be manufactured from its Arco Felice factory in Naples, Italy.

While Nexans will supply and install approximately 500km of mass impregnated non-draining (MIND) HVDC cables for installation in the fjord, tunnel and lake sections, as well as the onshore section in Norway.

ABB secured worth US$450 Million supply contract. The scope covers supply of two 525kV, 1.4GW high voltage direct current converter stations, one at each end of the link.

In the third quarter of 2015, the construction work on the project commenced.

In February 2016, Steel River Consultants (SRC) appointed to act as hazard identification (HAZID) facilitator and provide CDM support and health and safety advisory services to cable supplier Prysmian.

In October 2016, Prysmian was awarded a sub-contract to design, fabricate and install to 940km of sub-sea cables and 4km of onshore cables.

In March 2017, WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff was appointed as the supply contract to provide cable manufacturing quality and inspection services for the project.

In July 2017, Canyon Offshore Ltd appointed as a cable sub contractor by Prysmian PowerLink to provide offshore cable trenching services and scope work includes the trenching of 900km and manufacturing and installing the two parallel HVDC cables.

Construction activities are underway with completion scheduled by the end of 2021.
