Mustus Energy Ltd (MEL) is undertaking the construction of a biomass power plant in Mackenzie, Alberta, Canada.

The project involves the construction of a 41.5MW biomass power plant on 24ha of land that use wood waste to produce electricity.

The project includes the construction of a powerhouse, storage tanks, a substation and related facilities, the installation of generators, turbines, boilers and transformers, and the laying of transmission lines.

In February 2012, Lockheed Martin was appointed as EPC and construction manager.

On February 23, 2012, MEL awarded contracts for Shin Nippon Machinery Co to supply turbines and Babcock & Wilcox to supply boilers.

In May 2012, MEL selected Hemaras Construction Inc. for earthworks.

In July 2012, earth works commenced.

In October 2013, earthworks have been completed.

In April 2014, MEL submitted the approval stipulates a completion date of March 31, 2015, and also requested a time extension to December 31, 2016 to complete the construction of the power plant.

MEL used a combination of debt financing, private investment and a US$5 million grant from the Canadian government to finance the project.

MEL received approval for an extension from the Alberta Utilities Commission.

In April 2017, MEL was in the process of completion time extension to September 30, 2019. The Commission approves a time extension.

Construction works are underway and scheduled for completion by September 30, 2019.

Scope
The project involves the construction of a 41.5MW biomass power plant on 24ha of land that use wood waste to produce electricity at the junc­tion of Highway 697 and the turn off to Highway 88 in La Crete, Mackenzie, Alberta, Canada.

The US$170 million project involves the following:
