The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MoTC) is undertaking the international airport project in Duhok, Kurdistan, Iraq.

The project involves the construction of an airport with 328,000 passengers, 8,700 tonnes of cargo and 3,450 aircraft movements per annum on 1.8ha of land.

The project includes the construction of passenger terminal building, taxiways, aprons, Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower, access roads, parking areas, security fence and gates, and the installation of equipment, safety and security systems.

The terminal building includes the construction of 18 check-in desks, immigration facilities, press, tobacco, souvenirs and duty-free shops, restaurant, cafes, mini market, bureau de change, banks, mosque and a modern baggage-handling system, six arrival and departure gates with direct bus access.

ATC tower includes the construction of aerodrome control, approach radar control, avionics equipment and a workshop, airfield ground lighting (AGL) equipment room and staff welfare facilities. The cost of ATC tower construction is US$6 million.

Makyol Construction Company joint venture with Cengiz Holding A.S. has been appointed as the construction contractor for the project.

In July 2010, Dar Al Handasah was appointed as the design consultant for the project. Aeroports de Paris Ingenierie (ADPI) was appointed as the consultant for reviewing plans for the project.

In February 2012, Incheon Airport was awarded a contract to provide project management services for the project. The scope of the work includes managing the master plan, subcontracts, engineering and construction quality, processes, costs and test operations.

In September 2012, the groundbreaking ceremony was held.

Construction activities are underway.
