Druk Green Power Corporation Ltd (DGPC) and Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Ltd (SJVNL) are planning to undertake a power plant on Wangchu River, Bhutan.

The project involves the construction of a 570MW hydroelectric power plant.

The project will include the construction of a dam of 134m height, two penstocks, a powerhouse, a substation and related infrastructure, the installation of transformers, four turbines of 142.50MW each and generators and the laying of transmission lines.

The project will be financed on 70% debt and 30% equity basis.

On December 30, 2011, the detail project report (DPR) was submitted to Central Electricity Authority (CEA).

In January 2014, Bhutan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs invited expressions of interest (EOI) from companies to undertake feasibility studies for the project with January 17, 2014 as the submission date.

On April 22, 2014, a inter-Govt agreement signed between Royal Government of Bhutan (RGoB) & Government of India (GoI).

On May 14, 2014, DPR was submitted to RGoB.

On July 9, 2014, Department of Hydropower and Power Systems of RGoB raised certain observations.

DPR has been approved by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).

On April 23, 2015, the DPR was approved by RGoB.

In August 2015, the empowered joint group (EJG) decided to expedite the implementation.

On February 24, 2016, field works commenced and underway.

In April 2016, SJVNL is in process of appointing another partner under a joint venture agreement.

Construction works will take 8 years to complete including 2 years for infrastructure works.

The project involves the construction of a 570MW hydroelectric power plant on Wangchu River in Bhutan.

The US$631 million project includes the following:
