Motion preservation devices are an exciting and often controversial segment of the spinal implant market.

These devices are used for treating pathologies similar to those that spinal fusion procedures address. However, unlike spinal fusion, motion preservation devices act to preserve the natural motion of the spine. Some motion preservation devices are used for treating pathologies that were previously untreatable with traditional fusion procedures, thus creating new markets for spinal implants.

Motion preservation devices may be divided into the following categories: artificial discs and dynamic stabilization devices. The annular closure device market has all but faded away in the U.S. as Anulex, the only manufacturer of these products, is now out of business. As of yet, the nucleus replacement and facet arthroplasty implant markets have not come into popularity among U.S. surgeons as the products still face regulatory hurdles. There is little expectation that these markets will ever become a viable alternative to certain spinal therapies.
