Here is the Editor’s Note for you to know about the July issue specifically:
In July 2017, there was a turnaround in China’s Li-ion battery cell market, becausesmall-sized power Li-ion batteries sold well. Some manufacturers revealed that export orders for electric bicycle in July were large.

The development of new industries like bike sharing and music flowerpot boosted the demand for small-sized power Li-ion batteries. Moreover, previous tests confirm that these batteries are appropriate to products like electric wheelchairs, so they can serve as substitutes for lead–acid batteries. All the things mentioned above contributed to the turnaround in the Li-ion battery cell market.

- Cathode materials: The markets of cobalt and ternary material were stable. As a peak season for the lithium ferrous phosphate (LFP) battery came, major manufacturers ran at full capacity and those suspended production in the past also resumed production. The price of LFP battery was stable, but the supply was still inadequate.

- Anode materials: The demand for anode materials from the power Li-ion battery industry grew. According to a supplier, its shipment of anode materials in July increased significantly. In addition, the prices of raw materials for anode materials climbed continuously, causing much pressure on those suppliers. Therefore, they intended to push up prices by about 20% upon completion of old orders. If downstream manufacturers do not agree new prices, the anode material suppliers will not provide products any more.

- Separators: The separator shipments were satisfactory and the price stabilised, because major producers ran at full capacity and increased capacity was not made full use of.

- Electrolyte: The electrolyte price remained stable in a steady market. Besides, the lithium salt price was unlikely to drop after continuous price cut in the past.

China’s Li-ion battery market has developed at breakneck pace in recent years, fuelled by the rise of the mobile phone, the tablet, and more lately the electric vehicle and energy storage industries.

Up to this point, Chinese manufacturers have used cost advantages to grab market share from their competitors in Japan, Korea and the US, but their long-term future is still uncertain as they struggle to close the R&D gap between themselves and their international competitors. Industry consolidation is also sure to accelerate over the next few years.
