Broken out: Operators will likely experience competition from prescription acne products
Abstract
Acne Treatment Manufacturing OTC The Acne Treatment Manufacturing OTC industry produces nonprescription cleansers, lotions, gels, toners, masks and pads containing acne-fighting ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. The industry benefits from fairly stable demand for these products because many acne-prone individuals consider them a necessary expense. However, adolescents comprise the industry’s largest market, and high unemployment levels combined with low disposable incomes in this age bracket have caused sales of over-the-counter (OTC) acne treatments to decline. Moreover, the industry has been undercut by less expensive goods produced abroad. Demand conditions are anticipated to remain stable over the five years to 2024, with industry revenue projected to decline more modestly. While low unemployment and rising disposable incomes will enable consumers to spend more on newly developed premium treatments with all-natural and organic ingredients, a globalized market will continue to erode the market for domestically manufactured products. Industry operators will also encounter greater competition from providers of prescription acne products and laser treatments in coming years.
This industry manufactures over-the-counter (i.e. nonprescription) acne treatment and medication. Industry products include active ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, sulfur, resorcinol or a combination of such ingredients, in addition to a range of inactive ingredients like emollients and surfactants. OTC acne treatments are mostly topical and are manufactured as gels, moisturizers, lotions, creams, soaps and pads.
