Expert Networks

The Expert Networks industry is characterized by a medium level of market share concentration. Gerson Lehrman Group (GLG), by far the largest operator in this industry, is estimated to account for 50.0% of total revenue alone. GLG, AlphaSights Ltd., Third Bridge Group Limited and Guidepoint Global LLC (Guidepoint) are estimated to account for 56.8% of total industry revenue in 2018. Over the five years to 2018, these operators, especially GLG, have maintained their dominance in the industry. This is primarily due to the ability of these companies to regain trust following the insider trading scandals and investigations prior to the current period.

Operators favor organic expansion over mergers and acquisitions

· Over the five years to 2018, the industry has had a low level of merger and acquisition activity. Many operators have been seeking to expand organically by improving their reputation and expanding their client base. One industry operator, Guidepoint, has used merger and acquisition activity as a means of expansion, however. In 2015, Guidepoint announced that it acquired Innosquared. Innosquared is a Germany-based expert network that operated across continental Europe. While this did not expand Guidepoint’s domestic influence, it was an efficient way for it to expand its services internationally.

Knowledge and experience drive internal competition
· Operators in the Expert Networks industry have to compete on the basis of price, scope of industry coverage and information and the breadth of knowledge, skills and expertise that a company can provide. The industry’s largest operators tend to have a greater capacity of experts in their networks and an international reach. As a result, these operators can serve clients on a global basis and win high-value contracts. Reputation is also an important factor, as an expert network company will develop a reputation through the success or failure of programs and strategies implemented.

Companies in this industry act as intermediaries between industry experts and entities that need expert information.

This report covers the scope, size, disposition and growth of the industry including the key sensitivities and success factors. Also included are five year industry forecasts, growth rates and an analysis of the industry key players and their market shares.
