The airframe must be able to withstand aerodynamic forces and stresses developed due to the weight of the crew, fuel, and payload. There was a large-scale improvement in the airframe materials market during the 1930s as the wood and fabric used earlier in aircraft were replaced by lightweight and high-strength materials such as aluminum alloys, magnesium, titanium, and some stainless steel.
