This IDC study examines key developments from U.S. 5G deployments in 2020, along with announced 5G commercialization efforts for 2021 and industrywide regulatory impacts (i.e., mid-band spectrum auctions) through both the consumer and business customer lenses. It also looks at the evolving 5G competitive landscape resulting from the completion of the T-Mobile-Sprint merger, the emergence of cable MVNOs, and DISH Network's aspirations to build a greenfield 5G network and emerge as a viable fourth wireless competitor in the United States. Forecasts for 5G subscriptions cover total mobile subscribers, as well as consumer and business segments, in addition to 5G IoT connections."To realize 5G's promise is to play the long game, but in the near term, 5G's adoption will depend on the excitement for what is new and tangible today, not what is possible tomorrow," says Jason Leigh, research manager, Mobility research at IDC. "Despite that, the uptake of 5G is a question of 'when' not 'if' with the pace of adoption hinging on the development and commercialization of new use cases and the expanding availability of 5G capable devices."
