Coal Mining in Indonesia to 2022 - Upcoming Power Plants to Encourage Domestic Consumption

Indonesia is a mineral-rich country, having significant deposits of coal, natural gas, petroleum, nickel, copper, tin, gold, and bauxite among others. It was the world’s ninth-largest country in terms of proven coal reserves at 25.5 billion tonnes (Bnt), accounting for 2.2% of the global total, at the end of 2016. The country’s coal industry is significant, covering 4,000 coal producers.

Indonesia was among the world’s top five producers of coal in 2017, when the country produced 477 million tonnes (Mt) of coal. During the review period (2000-2016), coal production in Indonesia increased to 456.2Mt, with up to 90% of this usually originating from the island of Kalimantan. Over the forecast period (2018-2022), coal production is expected to grow moderately to reach 465.4Mt in 2022.

The domestic coal market is limited, with the majority of it driven by the power sector. Thus, Indonesia relies on demand from its exports partners, which mainly originate from India, China, South Korea, and Japan.

This is primarily due to the availability of low-cost coal mines located near to its ports coupled with the country’s geographic location, which is close to emerging markets and potential export partners, such as India and China.

PT Bumi Resources Tbk, PT Adaro Energy Tbk, and PT Bukit Asam (Persero) Tbk are the major companies operating in Indonesia’s coal mining industry. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR), and the Directorate General of Mineral and Coal govern the mining industry in Indonesia.
