This IDC Perspective reviews an initiative by a commercial heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) building automation systems (BAS) provider to mitigate the complexity of developing its products and managing systems requirements via process change and streamlined automation. Commercial HVAC systems and building automation systems are highly complex because of a mix of newer and older technology and shorter and longer warranties, coupled with dynamically changing and emerging "smarter" systems and regulatory compliance needs. This means that execution and systems engineering (SE) in these environments must often be individualized and contextualized (to address differing customer needs and system requirements). This process is challenging, costly, and in dire need of effective visibility, management, and automation."It is critical to leverage partnerships that support agile process change and take into account existing organizational needs as well as emerging technology demands," said Melinda Ballou, research director for IDC's Agile Application Lifecycle Management, Quality, and Portfolio Strategies.
