This IDC Perspective takes a look at five rising trends related to the shifting approach toward a circular economy and the technology that enables them. Technology vendors, retailers, and consumers alike are truly starting to think in terms of a circular economy that "closes the loop." That involves taking a holistic view of the end-to-end supply chain, from product ideation and consideration of raw materials all the way through post consumer purchase to encompass the end of life of a product. We're still a long way from achieving this at scale, but the concept and pragmatic steps toward it served as a connecting thread throughout the majority of conversations at NRF's annual Big Show."Much like the move from best-of-breed solutions to platforms that can tie a supply chain together, the focus at NRF on a circular economy has come after years of isolated discussion of sustainable 'point solutions' -- organic ingredients, carbon reduction, and automation -- and has moved toward the entire supply chain, both digital and physical, as one integrated, dynamic, interconnected, interdependent network whose hallmarks are visibility, transparency, and sustainability," said Jordan K. Speer, research manager, Global Supply Chain.
