Magic carpet: As operators adopt more efficient manufacturing processes, the industry is expected to grow
Carpet Mills in the US The Carpet Mills industry is expected to grow slightly over the five years to 2019, driven by rising demand from the industry’s two key markets, residential and commercial customers. Within the residential market, gains in the number of housing starts and per capita disposable income levels have stimulated spending on home furnishing products, such as carpets and rugs. Similarly, growth in nonresidential construction activity and rising corporate profit has driven businesses’ demand for carpets as a means of furnishing offices and other company-owned facilities. Industry profit is expected to taper during the five-year period since increased prices of key inputs, such as synthetic fiber, has made production costlier to industry operators. Nonetheless, industry revenue has been able to sustain slight growth. Over the five years to 2024, industry revenue growth is expected to accelerate. The industry’s domestic residential and commercial market segments are both anticipated to expand, boosting industry performance. Additionally, the depreciation of the US dollar is anticipated to positively influence industry exports, making them increasingly affordable and, therefore, attractive to foreign consumers, even though the trade weighted index is expected to slightly decrease.
The Carpet Mills industry manufactures and finishes carpets and rugs for the domestic, commercial and industrial sectors. These products are generally woven or tufted and made from nylon or other synthetic materials. Although the majority of consumers use most carpets and rugs as final goods, some of the industry’s consumers use industry products as intermediate inputs in the production of a variety of goods, such as automobiles and boats.
