This IDC Perspective provides an extensive overview of European interests in ethics, privacy, and privacy-preserving technologies. Legal backgrounds are widely in place within Europe; the current challenge is to provide efficient and effective solutions and technologies to implement what is required by law. To face this ever-challenging situation, European bodies have decided to create EU-funded projects to enhance European competitiveness and position in data prescriptions and requirements. Although the projects are still in the implementation phase, important results have been already achieved. "Too many gray areas lie between personal and non-personal data when discussing data sharing and subjects' re-identification regulations," said Erica Spinoni, research analyst, European Software. "A single, unique, and one-size-fits-all approach cannot be used. Regulators need to identify and solve these gray areas; only then will it be possible to combine technologies and algorithms into a platform able to deal with European shared data."
