Scope
- The debit card market is likely to witness competition from digital-only banks and payment solutions providers. In November 2020, Germany-based digital-only bank N26 launched the N26 Smart bank account and Mastercard debit cards in Portugal. In September 2021, PayPal partnered with Mastercard to launch the PayPal Business Debit Mastercard in four new European countries, including Portugal. Using this card, businesses can access their PayPal funds instantly with unlimited 1% cashback on eligible purchases. The card has no monthly fees and no foreign exchange fees. In December 2021, UK-based Revolut launched its banking services in Portugal. The bank offers Mastercard-branded virtual and physical debit cards.
- The rising adoption of contactless payments is supporting the growth of card payments. According to the central bank, the value and volume of contactless card payments increased by 271% and 163% in 2020 compared to 2019. The adoption of contactless payments for public transport is also expected to boost card payments in Portugal. In July 2021, payment company LittlePay launched Tap to Pay for the Porto airport metro line and STCP bus line, enabling consumers to tap their contactless bank card or mobile wallets to pay for tickets.
- Innovative payment solutions are being introduced in the country. In June 2021, supermarket Continente launched a physical store with no checkouts, meaning customers do not need to wait in queues to make purchases. The system enables customers to enter the store, choose their products, and exit the store. Customers open the Continente Lab app and scan it at the entrance, as the store only permits entry to individuals who are signed up to the app. In-store sensors and cameras detect when products are taken from or returned to shelves, keeping track of the products a customer has selected in a virtual cart. Once an individual exits the store, the purchase amount is automatically debited from their Continente wallet.
