Online retail surges in Saudi Arabia amidst the COVID-19 pandemic
Saudi Arabia ranks highly within its neighboring gulf countries in terms of its online retail share or total retail sales.
The Kingdom is globally considered as a developing B2C E-Commerce market and is further expected to grow rapidly due to the COVID-19 situation. Fear of contracting the virus and high internet penetration rates in the KSA have resulted in more consumers turning towards online shopping. The Kingdom has seen a double digit growth in its online retail sales since 2019.
The pandemic brings changes in product categories purchased online
During the pandemic, the popularity of various products categories is on the rise compared to that from pre-pandemic times. Online purchases of “Entertainment at home” and “Consumer electronic” products have abruptly increased during the COVID-19 outbreak. Additionally, there is a surge in online orders for groceries and food. A recent survey cited in the publication indicated that a considerable share of online shoppers increased the frequency by which they got groceries/food delivered through online platforms.
