This IDC Perspective provides IDC's review and analysis of Blue Yonder's ICON 2020 and the company's direction going forward. The company's event was presciently titled "Supply Chains Save the World," well before COVID-19 showed up. During ICON, Blue Yonder highlighted the company's focus on the cognitive, intelligent capabilities driven by its cloud-enabled, machine learning-driven platform, dubbed Luminate, supporting its portfolio of solutions across the domains of planning, execution, and delivery and allowing for the optimization of edge technologies and human resources, which are intended to enable supply chains to live up to that lofty goal of saving the world."The resilience needed to respond to disruptions big or small requires companies to digitally transform, moving through stages of making AI visible and cleansing, automating, connecting, mining, analyzing, and applying AI to data so that it can be harnessed to work for a business rather than vice versa," said Jordan K. Speer, research manager, Global Supply Chain. "If you think of your data as a donkey, your business should be straddled atop a saddle, letting it move autonomously along the strategic paths you've laid out, with your human resources tugging the reins this way and that as needed. Without digitally enabling your business, your human resources are tugging on the reins from the ground, dragging the donkey very slow, plodding step of the way, head down, without visibility to incoming threats or possible opportunities." Speer said, "The Luminate platform is intended to provide an agile way forward to a matrixed, real-time, collaborative ecosystem by offering one view of the entire supply chain to work from -- that's the visibility -- and the connectivity and AI engine required to allow businesses to run autonomously, making decisions by themselves based on massive amounts of data and freeing humans to manage the operations that need attention and intervention."
