Production summed to 3.8bnt in 2020 - up by 4% over 2019, despite a fall of 6.3% in the first two months of 2020 due to the COVID-19 outbreak. China Shenhua Energy Co. Ltd, China National Coal Group Corp., Inner Mongolia Yitai Coal Co. Ltd and Yanzhou Coal Mining Co. Ltd are the major coal-producing companies in China, together produced 357Mt (million tonnes) coal during the first nine months of 2020. Lower domestic demand from the country’s power and steel industry has subdued the domestic coal consumption which fell by 1% to 3.9bnt in 2020, over 2019. The power industry dominates domestic coal demand, accounting for 53% of the total consumption, followed by manufacturing (20%), and steel (16%) in 2020. Within the power industry, coal accounted for 63.5% of China’s electricity mix in 2020. Although, on the back of the country’s zero-emission target, the share of coal in electricity generation is expected to fall to 57.6% by 2025 compared to the current level.
