This IDC Market Perspective assesses the evolution of quantum technologies in Europe by analyzing the latest technology advancements, the investments of European institutions and governments, the European research and innovation ecosystem, and the key use cases that are being experimented. Finally, an evaluation of the potential impact of quantum technologies on businesses and key advice for IT vendors already competing in or willing to break into the quantum domain are provided. "Even though quantum technologies are still far from commercial maturity, quantum research and development in Europe is gradually accelerating, and the number of business use cases being experimented is steadily growing. Thus, IT vendors should consider quantum technologies not as a short-term bet, but as a strategic long-term challenge for which they have to start preparing right away, such as by understanding the potential synergies between their own products and the quantum domain and by start building their internal quantum competencies," said Stefano Perini, senior research analyst, European Quantum Computing Launchpad co-lead. "Quantum computing has significantly progressed over the past year, underscored by the release of increasingly powerful processors and advanced development platforms. We are now at a tipping point in which the experimentation of quantum computing is rapidly scaling, thanks also to the accessibility of quantum computers on the cloud," said Francesca Ciarletta, senior research analyst, European Quantum Computing Launchpad co-lead.
