This IDC Market Perspective discusses mass shootings in the United States and examines how video surveillance can help address the issue. Mass shootings are a rising concern for the American public, and incidents like the recent Boulder shooting has increased calls for ways to curtail the violence. Video surveillance coupled with machine learning-enabled analytics offers a way to identify potential shooters before they can commit these horrific acts. Because many public venues and retail centers already have video surveillance, retrofitting the appropriate analytics should not be a major concern and would provide an added level of physical security.According to Mike Jude, research director, IDC's Video Surveillance and Vision Applications practice, it is possible to greatly reduce the threat of mass shooting by applying video analytics to existing video surveillance installations. "By utilizing machine learning-enabled video surveillance, shooters can be identified by their behavior, leading to early warning and the prevention of gun violence," he notes. "Such an approach would have improved the police response time and possibly saved lives in the recent shootings in Boulder, Colorado."
